Metallic abrasives
This group of materials includes steel shot and grit, cast iron grit, high tensile cut wire, stainless steel shot and aluminium shot. While highly effective for peening, an important factor to consider is the potential for surface contamination from the blast media – which could occur when using a steel shot to peen a stainless steel surface.
It is also important to remember that, due to their density, most metallic abrasives will cause considerable wear to both wheel and air blast equipment.
Metallic Blast Media
-High carbon cast steel shot
-Low carbon cast steel shot
-Chilled iron grit
-Steel grit
-Cut wire and conditioned cut wire
-Stainless steel shot
Steel Shot
Steel shot is spherical in shape. Steel shot will provide a smoother surface finish than steel grit.
Steel shot comes in a variety of sizes and levels of hardness. The bulk density is very high and must be taken into consideration with how that might affect your blasting equipment. Appropriate equipment needs to be implemented in order to properly use steel blasting media.
Steel grit
Steel Grit is Angular, random in shape. Steel Grit creates an etched surface, ideal for smooth painting and coating adhesion. Steel Grit is sharp, typically angular in shape and harder than steel shot. It can be reclaimed many times before it is rendered useless., which means it generates less waste and has a lower environmental impact than certain other abrasives.
Steel Grit is an angular, carbon steel media designed for quick and effective removal of surface contaminants and coatings. Steel Grit is softer than other media and is less likely to fracture leaving an etched finish.
Stainless steel shot / grit
Stainless steel shot and stainless steel grit are two media types that have become more popular. These products perform similarly to steel shot and steel grit, however, are made of stainless steel. They contain a higher concentration of nickel and chromium. They are good medias to consider when ferrous contamination of the work piece cannot be tolerated. Both of these products are cast products and are occasionally referred to as Cast Stainless Steel Shot and Cast Stainless Steel Grit.
Cut wire shot
Abrasive Products offers several different types of cut wire abrasives. Cut wire abrasive is made by taking wire of a specific diameter and cutting it into lengths, most always, the same dimension as the diameter. Cut wire is categorized by the metal make-up of the wire, the size, and also the shape or form. Stainless Cut Wire and Carbon Cut Cut Wire, in conditioned form, are commonly used in shot peening operations.
